#piamg is in it’s fourth season of competition, and in all honesty – it’s become a bit of a beast to run!

When we first started, we managed 24 entries in our first week, and that was only after we badgered a few friends to enter!  In comparison, this week we had nearly 40 entries in the first 5 minutes!

As the holder of a full time job (that I would prefer not to be fired from!), I am finding it increasingly difficult to run the competition in its current format.  Everything is done manually at the moment in a monster spreadsheet and so each entry takes time to process.  In addition, I know it is frustrating for folks who have to try and enter multiple times before they can get a number that nobody else has taken.

Long story short, change is coming!!  We’ve been doing some beta testing on a new automated process for #piamg in the last week or so and the time has come to move it into a production run.

So from this coming week onward (predictions in the weekend of 6/7 October), what you need to do will change…

New process

  • As usual I will put a tweet out saying that the competition has opened. The tweet will tell you how many games and provide a link to enter.
  • DO NOT REPLY with your guess on twitter – it will not be accepted
  • Click on the link in the tweet and you will be taken to a short form. You need to:
    • Type in your twitter username
    • Select your guess from a drop down list
    • Hit enter
  • The list of choices will only reflect the numbers that have not yet been selected
  • If someone else picks the number you chose while you are in the form, it should tell you and ask you to pick again
  • At the bottom of the article are some screenshots to help explain the process as well.

Some dos and don’t

DO NOT enter multiple times. People found doing this will get

  1. First occurrence – a warning and I will pick which entry is the real one
  2. Second occurrence – all entries removed for that week
  3. Third occurrence – all entries removed for that week and a ban from entering in the following week
  4. Fourth occurrence – banned for the rest of the season

This may seem a bit harsh – but by entering multiple times, you are removing options for other people who haven’t entered yet.  Unfortunately, the only way to  stop multiple entries from the same account is to add a requirement that only people with a google account (and who are logged on to it) can enter – I don’t want to have to go down that path as we want to keep this as simple as possible.

If you realise you have made multiple entries by accident, I will be more forgiving if you contact me and ask to have one removed before I find it myself.

DO check your twitter username is correct before entering. If you do enter the wrong twitter username by accident (e.g. a mis-spelling) – contact me via direct message on twitter and I will correct for you.  Do not enter again under the correct username (this will count as a double entry)

We appreciate this process will take a little longer than just sending a quick tweet back to enter, but my beta testers have said that it’s not too bad and has the definite bonus of only showing you which numbers remain which should avoid the frustration of having to enter again and again in order to get something against your name.

The last thing I want to do is have to give up the competition altogether because I can’t cope with running it anymore. So I hope everyone gives this new method a go and accepts that there may be some teething problems to start with.

I will very much welcome constructive criticism or suggestions for improving the process – you can contact me via DM on twitter or via email (482days@gmail.com).

Lastly – a massive thanks to the group of beta testers who helped me out this week with running tests and giving feedback.  Much appreciated guys.

Below are some screenshots of the process (taken using an android phone – but pretty much the same whatever the device/operating system)

When you click on the link you’ll be taken to a screen like this – first thing you should do is enter you twitter username

Now click on the little down arrow next to ‘Choose’.  You will be taken to a (long) list of numbers

You can see that the list of numbers here already has some gaps where other people have selected a response (e.g. 212 and 217-222 are all missing from the list).  Click the number you want to enter.

You’ll be taken back to the main screen which shows what you have answered.  Double check everything is correct and hit submit.

You will get a final screen saying your response has been recorded.

That’s it – you have just entered #piamg!

Want to win a limited edition @482days mug this weekend? We have a special #PredictionIsAMugsGame (#piamg) competition that’s just for the attendees this weekend with one mug to be won in each of the four games.

How? Just predict the time of the first goal in the game (in seconds).

Closest entry (after the time of the goal) will win.  But once your time has passed – you are out.

Rules:

  1. You must be able to collect the mug on the day (i.e. attendees only)
  2. You must enter via twitter with a public tweet @482days (or just reply to our tweet kicking each round off)
  3. Tweet must contain the #piamg hashtag and give your selected time in the format mm:ss (in any order but it must contain the hashtag and time and be directed at us)
  4. We’ll open the competition about an hour before each game is due to face off and you must enter before the puck drops for the start of the game
  5. Only entries made in the hour(ish) before the match will count, you must enter once for each of the four matches, guesses from previous games will not carry over.

Note : If you have a private account – send us a DM requesting that we follow you so we can see your entry. If we can’t see your tweet – you haven’t entered!

Make sure you are following us on twitter for each game start announcement (it will have a picture of the mugs on it) and for all the chat during the weekend.

Playoffs are coming – and that means it’s also time for our own own playoff competition to commence!

It’s been another fantastic year of #piamg! At the time of writing, 219 of you have entered the competition at least once – and the average number of entries is 98 each week with the current record standing at 110 entries in a single week.  That’s a big increase on last year – so a huge thanks to everyone!

An extraordinary 38 of you (twice as many as last year!) have entered every single week this season – and there will be a special reward (see below) for our 100% club. A special mention again goes to the 4 of you who have yet to miss a week since we started #piamg last season (take your annual bow @detroit97, @jasonskint, @Jdubz78 and @spedeworthsix). This season saw 2 more of them win their first mug – so we just need to get @spedeworthsix a win now!

It’s definitely been Invicta’s year on the wins this season – as we’ve sent more mugs to Kent than everywhere else put together! Here’s a nifty little graph showing where our supporters have come from this season…

Of our winners, we’ve had a few multiple mug winners this season: @wingnut2711 again won himself a brace as did @j93jordan but the overall plaudits have to go to @jonakers who won a hattie of mugs this season.

For consistency though – it’s the Chelmsford Chieftains fans (and most specifically members of the Wall family) who came top. When we looked at how far away you were on average through the season, @helen847 takes the win, just beating out her Dad @geoffreywall!  One of our NIHL2 correspondents @McDermott_Sport takes the bronze. The full set of rankings for the 63 of you who entered at least 80% (23 times) can be seen here!

But enough about our stats – what you all want to know if ‘How do I win the damn playoff prize?’ You want that travel mug and the ultimate bragging rights for the season!  I warn you – it’s not for the fainthearted, it will require skill, stamina or a ridiculous run of good luck that will have people asking you to pick their lottery numbers.

We have a massive total of 6 weeks of playoffs across the leagues this year. So this is a 6-week competition with about half of you being knocked out each week (did we mention it’s not easy to win!).

Firstly – sorry – but I can’t let all 219 of you enter! This competition is a ‘thanks’ to those who have entered at least somewhat regularly through the season. This year as we have an extra round of playoffs compared to last year we’ve been able to set the bar for entry a little lower. So just like player eligibility for the playoffs – you need to have played at least 25% of regular season games to be allowed to compete in the playoffs. That means anyone with at least 7 entries can join (a whopping 118 of you in total).

However, for the 38 of you who are in my 100% group – as a special ‘you rock – thanks guys’, you will be given a bye into the second round!

This is a knockout competition – so once you are out, you are out.  The full rules are below.

So “how do I win this thing of wonder?” I hear you ask…

Round 1 (March 17-18)
Includes only the 16 games in the NIHL1 regional playoffs (North and South) first round.
The 80 twitter accounts with 25-99% (7-26 weeks) of previous #piamg entries this season will be included
The top 42 will qualify to round 2

Round 2 (March 24-25)
Includes only the 8 games in the NIHL1 regional playoff (North and South) semi-finals
The 38 twitter accounts with 100% (27 weeks) of previous #piamg entries this season will join the top 42 qualifiers from round 1 to make a total of 80 in this round
The top 40 will qualify to round 3

Round 3 (March 31-April 1)
Includes only the 4 games in NIHL1 regional playoff (North and South) finals
The top 40 from round 2 will be eligible
The top 20 will qualify for the quarter-final round

Quarter-final Round (April 7-8)
Includes the 4 games in the NIHL1 national finals (including the NIHL2 regional winners game)
The top 20 from round 2 will be eligible
The top 10 will qualify for the semi-final round

Semi-final Round (April 14-15)
Includes the 8 games in the NIHL2 Southern QF and the 3 games in the NIHL2 North finals weekend.
The top 10 from the quarter-final round will be eligible
The top 5 will qualify for the final round

Final Round (April 21-22)
Includes only the 3 games in the NIHL2 playoff final.
The top 5 from the semi-final round will be eligible
The winner will be crowned at the end of this round.

#PIAMG #PLAYOFF rules

  1. The competition will run across the 6 weeks of the NIHL1 and NIHL2 North and South playoffs with a schedule as outlined above.
  2. The aim is to guess how many goals will be scored in the playoff games (and only the playoff games).
  3. In all cases, the top XX will be defined as those who are closest to the correct total. In the event of a tie, the lower guess will win/qualify for the next round*
  4. Each week of the competition, @482days will open entries with a tweet. This will occur at 6pm on Thursdays. You will then have the time between that tweet appearing and the puck dropping on the first game to enter. If you do not enter within that time frame you will be automatically disqualified.
  5. As with the normal #piamg competition, it is first come, first served for guesses. We will take entries in the order in which they appear in our twitter feed.
  6. To qualify for entry to the playoffs, you must have played at least 7 previous #piamg games this season**.  Those who have entered all 27 previous #piamg weeks will be given a bye in Round 1 and will enter the competition at the Round 2 stage.
  7. After each weekend, we will notify those who qualified for the next round via twitter.

The decision of @482days is final in all aspects of the competition and just like the EIHA, we reserve the right to change the rules at any point in the competition!

* e.g. in round 3 if the correct total is 28 and the 20th and 21st closest guesses are 16 and 40 (both 12 away) then the person who guessed 16 will go through and the person who guessed 40 will be eliminated.

** Eligible entrants will receive a DM via twitter in the next day or so.  If you are haven’t received a DM by Friday March 16 then you have not qualified***.

***If you have not qualified, you can apply for exemption to the LMC @482days on twitter. If you can give us a convincing/amusing enough reason why we should allow you to enter, we may choose to let you! This must be applied in a public tweet (i.e. not a DM) directed at @482days and will be denied/confirmed before the start of the Round 1. The decision of @482days is final.

This season has seen a bit of an explosion of our #predictionisamugsgame (#piamg) competition. With lots of news teams in NIHL South, we now have more entrants than ever before. In the first 6 weeks of this season, 140 of you have entered at least once (we had 150 enter at least once across the whole of last season in comparison) and we have been tracking well over 90 entries a week for the last few weeks.

When we started the competition we had about 20-30 enter to start with and while I was hoping to grow that a little, I never imagined that we’d get to a stage where we often had that many entries within 10-20 minutes of the competition opening each week.

The problem is of scalability… these days if you haven’t entered in the first 60 minutes, you are pretty unlikely to have a hope of winning as all the plausible guesses had gone. I do still want to cater for those who may not have constant access to twitter on a work day! At the same time, I can’t go back to letting everyone have whatever number they wanted as I’m pretty sure we’d run out of mugs very quickly (not to mention the postage costs would bankrupt me). I also don’t want to change the simplicity of the game by adding in more than one thing to guess at (e.g. making people pick number of goals and time of first goal/team scoring first goal) as that would become difficult and time-consuming to track and I do actually work for a living myself as well.

So, given that this season we have a lot more cross-games and cross-promotion of the NIHL North divisions, the best way for us to expand without changing the nature of the game is to bring in the NIHL North games into the competition as well. This should close to double the number of eligible games each week – and thus double the range of plausibility, hopefully meaning that everyone will get something at least close to possible if they want it!

Note that we will not be RT’ing NIHL North only action in our #gamedaylive coverage (as I think my head would explode trying to keep up and I’d never get to see any of the game I’d actually gone to watch). But we will provide a ‘final’ update of all the games at the end of each day.

I hope everyone can get behind this change and see it for a good thing. The new format will start from this coming weekend.

Playoffs are coming – and that means it’s also time for our own own playoff competition to commence!

It’s been another fantastic year of #piamg! At the time of writing, 150 of you have entered the competition at least once – and the average number of entries is 67 with the current record standing at 76 entries in a single week.

An extraordinary 19 of you have entered every single week this season – and there will be a special reward (see below) for our 100% club. A special mention goes to the 4 of you who have yet to miss a week since we started #piamg last season (take a bow @detroit97, @jasonskint, @Jdubz78 and @spedeworthsix). Sad to say – only one of the four of them has actually won a mug so far proving that prediction really is a mugs game!

So far we’ve sent out 25 mugs to 22 different people, we’ve got one double-winner this season (@wingnut2711) and one treble winner (@grantwoolway – also known as ‘greedy’ who won 3 times in just 5 weeks). We have also had a husband and wife win in successive weeks – thus hopefully restoring peace within that household quickly!.

Rather bizarrely – of the 19 of you who have entered every week – only 4 have won a mug this season. But we have sent out a total of 13 mugs to 10 winners from the 17 people who have just missed one or two weeks across the season.  So it’s almost like missing a week makes you more likely to win a mug (or perhaps winning a mug makes you more likely to miss a week). For those of a statistical bent – you are almost 3 times more likely to have won at  least one mug if you missed a week than if you didn’t – and this result is statistically significant (p=0.039)!

As there is no overlap between the NIHL1 and NIHL2 playoffs this year – we have a total of 5 playoff-rounds (3 weeks of NIHL1 then 2 weeks of NIHL2). So this is a 5-week competition with about half of you being knocked out each week (did we mention it’s not easy to win!).

Firstly – sorry – but I can’t let all 150 of you enter! This competition is a ‘thanks’ to those who have entered regularly through the season. With so many entering on a pretty regular basis this season, we’ve had to keep the cutoff fairly high – so it will be set at 50% this year. That means you must have entered in at last 13 of the 26 weeks (including this week) that the normal #piamg game has run in this season so far.

However, for the 19 of you who are in my 100% group – as a special ‘you rock – thanks guys’, you will be given a bye into the second round!

This is a knockout competition – so once you are out, you are out.  The full rules are below.

Note that we will continue our usual #piamg competition up to the weekend of April 8th/9th (the end of the NIHL2 regular season). This will run alongside the playoff with entries opening as usual on Wednesdays and will continue to be open to all.

So “how do I win this thing of wonder?” I hear you ask…

Round 1 (March 25-26)
Includes only the 8 games in the NIHL1 playoffs first round.
Those with 50-99% (13-25 weeks) of previous #piamg entries this season will be included
The top 21 will qualify to round 2

Round 2 (April 1-2)
Includes only the 4 games in the NIHL1 playoff semi-finals
Those with 100% (26 weeks) of previous #piamg entries this season will join the top 21 qualifiers from round 1 to make a total of 40 in this round
The top 20 will qualify to round 3 (quarter-final round)

Quarter-final Round (April 8-9)
Includes the 2 games in the NIHL1 playoff finals, and the 3 games in the NIHL2 cup final weekend (5 games total).
The top 20 from round 2 will be eligible
The top 10 will qualify to round 4 (semi-final round)

Semi-final Round (April 15-16)
Includes only the 3 games in the NIHL2 playoff semi-finals (note that Chelmsford Warriors cannot get ice time for their hom game against Cardiff Fire so this has been awarded 0-0).
The top 10 from the quarter-final round will be eligible
The top 5 will qualify to round 4 (semi-final round)

Final Round (April 15-16)
Includes only the 2 games in the NIHL2 playoff final.
The top 5 from the semi-final round will be eligible
The winner will be crowned at the end of this round.

#PIAMG #PLAYOFF rules

  1. The competition will run across the 5 weeks of the NIHL1 and NIHL2 South playoffs with a schedule as outlined above.
  2. The aim is to guess how many goals will be scored in the playoff games (and only the playoff games, except Week 3 when we are including the NIHL2 cup final weekend as well).
  3. In all cases, the top XX will be defined as those who are closest to the correct total. In the event of a tie, the lower guess will win/qualify for the next round*
  4. Each week of the competition, @482days will open entries with a tweet. This will occur at 8pm (midday) on Thursdays.
  6. Entries for the playoff round MUST include the hashtag #piamg-playoffs or #piamg-po  to differentiate them from entries into the normal competition. Entries which do not include this hashtag will not be counted.
  7. To qualify for entry to the playoffs, you must have played at least 13 previous #piamg games this season**.  Those who have entered all 26 previous #piamg weeks will be given a bye in Round 1 and will enter the competition at the Round 2 stage.
  8. After each weekend, we will notify those who qualified for the next round via twitter.

The decision of @482days is final in all aspects of the competition and just like the EIHA, we reserve the right to change the rules at any point in the competition!

* e.g. in round 2 if the correct total is 28 and the 20th and 21st closest guesses are 16 and 40 (both 12 away) then the person who guessed 16 will go through and the person who guessed 40 will be eliminated.

As we come to the end of our first season here at 482Days HQ, we want to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped make it such a successful start.

One of our favourite things this season has been our #predictionisamugsgame competition – just like the rest of our brand this has really grown over the season from a start where we were quite chuffed to get just past 20 entries in our first week (and wow – some of those guesses were wild!) to its current state where we can pretty much guarantee at least 40 entries in the first few hours!

To thank those of you who have been regular entrants and helped make the competition so much of a success, we have decided to run a special playoff competition to run alongside our regular weekly #piamg competition.

This is a knockout competition with 4 rounds to get through – so winning will not be easy and the winner will be able to claim to have skill and judgement (or a run of awesome luck)! Hopefully you will all consider the prize (pictured above) to be worthy –  a completely unique, one-of-a-kind travel mug*!

Note that we will continue our usual #piamg competition up to the weekend of April 16/17 (the last weekend with at least 5 games). This will run alongside with entries opening as usual on Wednesdays.

So “how do I win this thing of wonder?” I hear you ask…

#PIAMG #PLAYOFF rules

  1. The competition will run across the 4 weeks of the NIHL1 and NIHL2 South playoffs.
  2. The aim is to guess how many goals will be scored in the playoff games (and only the playoff games) across each weekend**.
  3. After week 1, only the top 20 will progress to the second round (week 2).
  4. After week 2, only the top 10 will progress for the third round (week 3).
  5. After week 3, only the top 5 will progress to the final (week 4).
  6. In all cases, the top XX will be defined as those who are closest to the correct total. In the event of a tie, the lower guess will win/qualify for the next round***
  7. Each week of the competition, @482days will open entries with a tweet. This will occur at 5pm on Thursdays. You will then have the time between that tweet appearing and the puck dropping on the first game to enter. If you do not enter within that time frame you will be automatically disqualified.
  8. As with the normal #piamg competition, it is first come, first served for guesses. We will take entries in the order in which they appear in our twitter feed.
  9. Entries for the playoff round MUST include the hashtag #piamgplayoffs to differentiate them from entries into the normal competition. Entries which do not include this hastag will not be counted.
  10. To qualify for entry to the playoffs, you must have played at least 9 previous #piamg games****.
  11. After each weekend, we will notify those who qualified for the next round via twitter.

The decision of @482days is final in all aspects of the competition and just like the EIHA, we reserve the right to change the rules at any point in the competition!

* OK yeah, it’s still just a mug, but we do need to keep to the theme you know!

** There will be 8 games in Week 1 (NIHL1 QF round), 4 games in Week 2 (NIHL1 SF round), 6 games in Week 3 (NIHL1 Final and NIHL2 SF round) and 2 games in the Week 4 (NIHL2 Final).

*** e.g. in round 1 if the correct total is 62 and the 20th and 21st closest guesses are 50 and 74 (12 away) then the person who guessed 50 will go through and the person who guessed 74 will be eliminated.

**** Eligible entrants will receive a DM via twitter in the next day or so.  If you are haven’t received a DM by Saturday March 20th then you have not qualified*****.

*****If you have not qualified, you can apply for exemption to the LMC @482days on twitter. If you can give us a convincing/amusing enough reason why we should allow you to enter, we may choose to let you! This must be applied for and confirmed before the start of the Week 1 competition and the decision of @482days is final.
