Week 4 of the season and it’s double-headers all around for the 8 NIHL1 South teams. It’s already the end of the Autumn Cup group stages with two semi-final spots still up for grabs and Swindon start their league campaign at last.
Swindon finally open their league season with a double-header against Invicta Dynamos. Having already secured their Autumn Cup semi-final spot, the Wildcats will doubtless be looking for 4 points here against a Dynamos side who have yet to register a point. With the Wildcats showing such dominant form at home at the moment, I’d be surprised if the Game in Swindon on Saturday saw anything other than a home win. Sunday could be a different story though, the Dynamos are going to want to put on a good show for their home fans and while it hasn’t quite clicked yet there were some very positive signs last weekend when I watched the game. Mos are going to start picking up some points soon and while Swindon will be favourites for the win, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Mos nick something on home turf.
Bracknell finally lost their unbeaten record last weekend in Streatham when the Redhawks took a 4-2 win, despite being outshot. They will look to bounce back on Saturday against a Raiders team that they have already beaten 3 times in September (2 challenges, one league game). Raiders who have ambitions of their own for a top 3 spot this season, will want to show that they can beat anyone here and will be looking to reverse those earlier results.
Also on Saturday, Milton Keynes host Streatham in a reverse of the opening day thriller which saw the Redhawks edge the game with a 3-2 overtime win. It’s the only point that Thunder have picked up so far and they will want to go one better this time. Streatham meanwhile will be feeling good after that win against a highly fancied Bees team and will be taking lots of confidence into this game.
Sunday sees Bracknell and Streatham swap opposition with the Bees matching up against MK and Streatham hosting the Raiders. Streatham vs Raiders is always a tasty fixture and usually hotly contested. Two weeks ago, Raiders edged it with a 3-2 regulation win in Romford, will home ice for the Redhawks make a difference this time?
Autumn Cup Action
It’s the final weekend of the group stages. Swindon and Sheffield are already back in the clubhouse and can do no more (Wildcats with qualification assured). Hull have also guaranteed themselves a semi-final spot with 2 games in hand and the rest duke it out for the final two spots in the next round.
In the North: As mentioned above, Hull have already qualified and need just one point from the four remaining games to top the group. Telford will qualify if they secure at least 3 points from the two games and could theoretically win the group with a 4 point weekend if Pirates fail to register a point. Sheffield can only look on now as their group round games are all done, they’ll take the 2nd spot though if Telford can only manage 2 or less points.
In the South, Swindon have finished their group games and have qualified. They will top the group if Peterborough don’t get 3 points (well technically 2 points with a rather unlikely +6 GD would also do it). Peterborough need 2 points to guarantee a spot in the semi-final and 3 to win the group while Bison need at least 3 points more than Peterborough can score in order to stay in.
482days will have updates from all the #oneNIHL games across the weekend.
