FINAL: Poland (3-1) 1 – 2 Great Britain (3-1)
Story of the Game:
Shocker for GB: Just 94 seconds into the game and Katarzyna Frackowiak put a shot through on the net which Nicole Jackson was able to get most of but just dribbled over the line to put Poland one-nil early and make the task of winning by two a lot harder. GB would go onto get an early penalty from Sophie Herbert for Cross-Checking, all in all, a first five to forget for GB.
First chances, GB fight back: Leanne Ganney flicks one on at the net and it’s saved, but it’s during a good passage of play that sees multiple shots on goal for GB but unable to convert. GB outshot Poland 4-3 in this area and looked good and attacking.
But Poland controlled the first period overall: Poland out shot GB 12-8 but more than that, had two or three more real scoring opportunities than the goal, passed better and had more of the overall play. GB went into the locker room knowing that had a lot they needed to do.
Into the 2nd: and great chance Kathryn Marsden! In front of net after a pass from behind the net but didn’t manage to hit the target. A spell of four on four happened afterwards with both sides able to kill off the penalties.
Crash-bang-wallop!: GB ON THE BOARD! Was it pretty? No, but no one in the arena cares after a superb hardworking goal from Chrissy Newman who poked the puck up after hard work from Louise Durnell for fighting to get the puck in the slot.
GB chance after chance, then penalty trouble Poland: GB dominate the latter half of the period with Poland struggling to keep up with the pace after a large amount of chances for GB. Poland then took two penalties in short succession. Could GB score on the Powerplay? Well….
TURN AROUND AND PICK THAT OUT THE NET! Oh yes yes yes! Louise Adams take a bow! Slapshot from the just inside from the point, into the top right hand corner of the net and it rebounds off the net so hard it ends up back in the slot! Outstanding shot, keeper was well screened and had no chance at all.
Poland off to a flyer in the third: Poland came out of the changing room flying and GB Head Coach Cheryl Smith wasted no time in calling her timeout. Felt it was the right decision as GB needed to get back in the game as they still needed to score again.
GB penalty issues: GB had two penalties in five minutes at times that they really needed to go on the attack. Penalty kill was far more attacking than we’d seen at previous points in the game…
GB win… but not by enough: An incredible end to the game. Poland pull the netminder, but GB cannot force the empty net goal. and it’s 2-1 GB>
482 (or less) things we saw:
- Sarah Hutchinson getting a penalty for having a player fall over her (stationery) stick.
- An utter transformation of GB between periods one and two, it was like watching a different team
- Poland’s strategy for hockey seems to be very straight, either setting it up directly in front of goal or from behind it, they are at the most comfortably when in the slot.
- Fantastic atmosphere, it wasn’t a big crowd, but it was passionate from both supporters.
- For us, Poland’s players went over a little bit too easily.
- Finally, a fantastic game all around. Great advert for the women’s game.
Best Team Won? GB worked so hard in a competitive match. Both teams had their chances but GB earned these 3pts for sure.
